It's obvious from the first moment that you land on this currency converter that it is very Euro centric. The colours are those of the European flag; it is called the Euro Calculator, and the “favourite icon” (the graphic by the URL in the browser) is that of the Euro: €
The currency converter on this website is an odd fish. It is simultaneously very basic and quite powerful. The site lacks many additional features that can be useful, such as historical exchange rate data/ comparisons; graphs; cross rates, that sort of thing.
You can see cross rates but you have to ask for them. I'll get to that last.
First the Euro Calculator itself: there's a list of 22 popular international currencies. When you load the page the default is that it will contain the exchange rate for each currency from the Euro. I.e. 1 Euro will buy you ... each of the destination currencies' values are listed.
If you wish to use the currency converter to convert a specific amount of a specific currency all you have to do is find that currency and input the amount you wish to convert.
If, for example, you wanted to convert 100 Chinese Yuan to Swiss Francs you would go to the box beside Chinese Yuan and overwrite the contents of the box with the value 100.
Next you would click on the button at the bottom left labelled “Convert”
Be sure to actually click on the word “Convert” and not just the button. Clicking on the button around the word will result in nothing happening. Once you have clicked “convert”the numbers displayed in each box will become how much of that currency you could buy with 100 Yuan.
So for our example if you look for the box labelled Switzerland:franc you might read that the conversion rate would be 15 Francs for your 100 Yuan.
The powerful part is that, of course, you can tell at a glance what the specific amount you wish to convert is worth in every currency listed. You don't have to repeatedly perform the same task of each conversion, they're all given at once.
Back to the cross rates I mentioned before. In order to see each currency's rates you can simply put the number 1 in that country's box and clicking convert.
E.g. putting a 1 in the box beside USA Dollar and clicking on convert (the word convert, remember) will result in each country's currency box displaying how much of their currency 1 USD will buy you.
Clicking on Exchange rates will default the converter back to the Euro rates where it started.
The rates used are the ones published by the European central bank
This is a very basic tool and although highly Euro centric there is something quite charming about it, like a small French pub or a fine Belgian bistro. There isn't a lot on the menu but you can't really complain about it because it does what it does very well.
