ADVFN has a broad range of features that would be very useful to any forex trader or person dabbling in the stock market.
Members (membership is free) get Live forex trading prices; the main page has month long graphs of daily exchange rates (with both axes filled so that you can actually read data from the graph), extensive custom and standard forex charts.
There's also a very useful series features for anybody new to the whole thing such as a listing of all the current countries' 3 letter reference symbol (e.g. UK pound is GBP, US dollar is USD, etc) and a massive forex glossary.
The site also aggregates a large volume of forex related news, so you can easily tell what is going on, and why certain movements are taking place.
The conversion area is numbered 1 – 3 so that you can follow which thing to do first.
1. Is where you select the currency that you wish to convert from. There's a choice of 185 currencies. No metals, or scripts, or similar forex instruments that you normally find associated with the stock market, just actual currencies. In fairness some of the currencies listed include the French Franc and German Mark (it does say “see Euro” under the French Franc listing, in fairness).
Only two of the currencies appear with their 3 letter international currency code. The Central African Franc (XAF) and the West African Franc (XOF).
Many alternative websites encourage you to enter a value of the currency that you wish to convert from as a separate step, but on advfn's conversion site it is tucked-in to the bottom of step 1. If you wanted to convert $123 USD into another currency, that is the place you would type in the number 123 – as ever, be sure to enter the amount without any currency symbols, such as $
Select the currency that you wish to convert to in step 2.
Step 3 is just as simple as clicking on the button that says perform conversion click here. The same page reloads but with the conversion performed below Step 3 – there is an arrow pointing towards it, which should help.
The results box includes the converted amount that you requested, and the cross rates (X to y/ Y to X) for the currencies too.
Further down the page there is a 6 month running rate graph that show the medium term trends for the cross rates, and an inter day chart. The raw data that makes up the graph is not listed here, but the graphs have full annotated X and Y axes and you can click on the chart to get a larger interactive chart that displays a lot of useful detail.
All in all a useful site with good features and an easy-to-use currency converter.
